15 April 2026 Picture of the Day

[edit]

Who can make a change to one link on today's POTD?

According to the Key Monastery Wikipedia page, they specifically practice Tibetan Buddhism. Quote: "

A quote from the Tibetan Buddhism on English Wikipedia,

  • "Tibetan Buddhism evolved as a form of Mahayana Buddhism stemming from the latest stages of Buddhism (which included many Vajrayana elements)."

The more general term Indo-Tibetan Buddhism describes Vajrayana within various nations in Asia.

I suggest the "Indo-Tibetan Buddhism" link should be changed to "Tibetan Buddhism." Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 17:47, 15 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

25 April 2026 Picture of the Day

[edit]

It would be awesome if decapitated animals were not selected for POTD. This was the first thing I saw when I opened my phone this morning because I have the Wikipedia widget on my home page. Normally that lets me see some charming art or landscape photo. Not this time… ~2026-25235-94 (talk) 12:19, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I also find the picture personally gross but I don't think there's anything fundamentally different between a picture of two severed pig heads hanging from meat hooks and a picture of barbecue pork ribs for example. Bausen Slaw (talk) 17:41, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Pictures of the Day are not usually pork ribs or any form of meat either.
This one is an extreme outlier which does not fit the usual PotD themes. ~2026-25463-05 (talk) 18:03, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
What "themes" are there for PotD? Images are promoted to Featured Picture due to their merits as a photograph as described in Commons:Featured picture candidates. Wikimedia is not censored to bow down to every cultural and personal view, which is why the Food and Drink section of Featured Photographs include meat (such as this one from February) or why historical photos such as the Thích Quảng Đức self-immolation or executions are also featured. Butchery is an incredibly common trait in every culture, and there is no reason to obscure that aspect. GGOTCC (talk) 18:26, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, the above claim is silly because PotD doesn't have "themes", either in the past or today. Nowhere on this site is it written, literally anywhere, that FPs and PotDs must follow some specific "theme". It feels like people are trying to invent all sorts of false narratives because they feel emotionally confronted by the cognitive dissonance that their burger is the result of genuine and horrific suffering, yet are unwilling to turn to vegetarianism. (Before accusations are thrown around, I'm an omnivore.) This sort of image is precisely what FP is about - high quality images that convey strong emotion and tell an important narrative to the viewer. I'd argue that a photograph of pig heads at a market is more worthy of PotD than some boring grass hill in the Netherlands, precisely because of this. The opposition to the PotD, both here, and on the file talk page, serve to affirm this even further. --benlisquareTalkContribs 07:56, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Being a vegetarian is precisely why it is upsetting to see this picture. ~2026-25463-05 (talk) 09:07, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Would you rather the horrors that humans force upon animals to be hidden away, so that nobody can know about it, and everyone can eat meat in oblivious bliss? Getting people uncomfortable about things is the first step to creating dialogue to improve the situation, is it not? --benlisquareTalkContribs 10:02, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
